Live Fire Training Facility

-A A +A

When it comes to fire training, there’s no such thing as enough. As volunteers who train to the level of career firefighters, members of the AVFD are required to recertify at least annually on numerous skills from Incident Command to Hoses and Ladders, Ventilation, and Live Fire Situations.  A live fire training facility will soon be built in Farmington.  For a commitment of $500,000, the AVFD will have the opportunity to hold partial ownership in the facility, allowing members to train frequently enough to assure proficiency.  In addition, the new facility will make it easier for volunteers to train with colleagues in their own fire companies as well as those in mutual aid communities.  AVFD members will be able to safely practice and improve skills in a realistic setting with a reasonable time commitment, learning how to better protect themselves so they can protect the residents of Avon and their property.

Despite the fact that the AVFD’s status as an all-volunteer department saves the Town of Avon millions of dollars per year, the Town budget is unable to provide complete funding of the Department’s required commitment to the live fire training facility.  The AVFD needs to raise this money by July 2014.  For more information or to help, please email us or call retired fire chief Jamie DiPace at 860.221.5725.

Over the next several months, the AVFD will hold different fundraisers for the live fire training facility.  The biggest event planned so far is a Golf Tournament at Farmington Woods in August.  Please check back here often and connect with us on Facebook for updates.
