War of the Worlds Radio Broadcast at Avon Library

Event Date:
Tuesday, October 30, 2018 - 3:00pm

On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles shocked the nation with a “fake news” radio broadcast about Martians invading the United States. The realistic radio play terrorized listeners and created widespread panic before Welles went on the air and explained to listeners that it was just fiction. On the 80th anniversary of that event, the Avon Free Public Library will be re-playing the original radio broadcast in the Library Atrium, complete with a 1936 GE radio console on loan from the Vintage Radio and Communications Museum of CT. The program will be held on Tuesday October 30, 2018 at 3:00 pm.

In addition, the library will present the 2005 feature film War of the Worlds on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 1:30 pm. The film, directed by Steven Spielberg, stars Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. The film is rated PG-13 and will be shown in the Library Community Room. Running time is 1hour and 57 minutes.

There is no charge and no registration required for either of the programs. The library is at 281 Country Club Rd., Avon, CT. For more information, please call the library at 860.673.9712 or visit www.avonctlibrary.info.
