Edible Wild Plants of Autumn

Event Date:
Wednesday, September 7, 2022 - 6:30pm

The Avon Free Public Library will present two virtual programs this fall with Karen Monger of The 3 Foragers. The 3 Foragers are a family from southeastern Connecticut that have worked with libraries, nature centers, summer camps, garden clubs, land trusts, and private citizens since 2016 to introduce people to the wonderful world of wild edible plants and fungi of Southern New England. Their blog, Facebook page, and book “Adventures in Edible Plant Foraging” all focus on family-friendly activities, the environmentally sustainable harvest of wild plants and fungi, and ways to incorporate these foods into your diet with original recipes.

Edible Wild Plants of Autumn will be presented Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at 6:30 pm. Autumn is a time of bounty and harvest for woodland creatures and foragers alike. Nuts are falling to the forest floor, fruits are ripening, and roots and tubers are thickening up in anticipation of sustaining the plants through the tough winter. Learn how to identify, sustainably harvest, and prepare the wild foods of autumn, from acorns to minty wintergreen leaves.

Edible Wild Mushrooms will be presented Monday, September 19, 2022 at 6:30 pm. Learn about the choice, wild mushrooms that can be found throughout Connecticut from the earthy morels of spring, through the golden chanterelles of summer, to the abundant maitakes of autumn, along with several more species you may never have heard about before.

Registration is required for these Zoom programs. To register, or for more information, please visit www.avonctlibrary.info, or call the library at 860.673.9712.
