Avon, CT - January 14, 2020 - This past fall, the staff was able to continue to monitor and treat the turf up until a heavy snowfall in November. Prior to that, the entire area was core aerated which will help break up or loosen the compacted soil. In addition to the aeration, approximately 160 tons (20 tons per acre) of special grade sand was spread to help reduce the compaction and improve the drainage. The grass will remain dormant until the daytime temperatures range from 60 to 75 degrees.
We plan to open the new fields for two tournaments in May, and then officially open them in the fall of 2020 with a full schedule of practices and games. This plan will allow two local leagues to host their tournaments and allow the staff to further monitor and treat the turf. In the spring additional soil tests will be conducted. Based on those results staff will continue to fertilize, treat for weeds and apply lime as needed. Once the grass begins to grow in the spring, mowing will resume, twice a week.
