Event Date:
Saturday, December 2, 2023 - 2:00pm

Join us for an in-person presentation about the Middle East, co-sponsored by the Avon Library and CT Chapter of the United Nations.

Although much of the Middle East is arid and seemingly barren, millions of people have made it their home since Humans first walked out of Africa thousands of years ago. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, has been the source of the Judeo-Christian Tradition, and is now a critical geo-political region, resting on an immense supply of oil and infused with religious dynamism. It has been the focus - for better and worse - of intense western political activity for more than a century. It is in the midst of realignment with the Abrahamic Accords, as well as playing host for the United Nations Climate Summit later this year. And yet, ancient tensions continually reappear, as can be seen in recent events in both Israel and Azerbaijan. Exploring these issues to clarify the past and consider the future is Hamish Lutris, a scholar with a life-long interest in the Middle East.
